New Zealand - South Island - Part 3 - Queenstown and Fiordland

Queenstown Area

We were warned that Queenstown is busy and touristy.  And it is.  But everything around Queenstown makes it more than worth it.  And, yes, we did some of the tourist activities as well.

Sunrise over Queenstown

Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu, and the Remarkables

Shenanigans on the Skyline Gondola

The Queenstown luge - the lane dividers are only at the end, and it was much more fun than single-track alpine slides

This was recommended by everybody, and was a blast.  It's pretty terrifying how they maneuver the boat straight towards the cliffs.  The same day we rode, we saw a jet boat in Skippers Canyon (upper Shotover River) crashed and nine people were injured.

The Remarkables

The Remarkables are visible from anywhere in Queenstown, and provide fantastic climbing on Tetons-like gneiss/schist rock.  We'll need to come back to explore more of the routes in this area.

Why did we get up this early?

Mesmerizing alpine flora

Katie cruising the fun cracks on "Indian Summer"

Alex picking his way across Queen's Drive, a "trail" that traverses steep shale slopes above thousands of feet of air across the west side of the Remarkables

Fiordland

I'll let the pictures tell the story of this very special place.

Next...

We've reached our furthest point south.  From here, we are heading back up through the Mount Cook area towards Christchurch, then on to Australia.

Halfway to the South Pole...time to head back north
